I love YNAB because it works! I have used Mint, Yodlee, and my own well-designed spreadsheets (I'm a CPA working in accounting & finance, I am quite fond of excel!), but nothing helps me budget as effectively as this software. I can hardly believe it was 6 months ago already that I decided to take a chance on it. I really scoffed at paying for budgeting software when I'd done so well with freebies in the past, but boy am I glad I decided to give this a try. So, why does it work?
1) Accessibility. I can access my budget and enter transactions on any of my devices, at home, at work, or on the go. And my husband can, too. (And to be totally honest, he usually doesn't... it's a work in progress!)
2) Flexibility. A budget used to be a set of goal numbers I'd drop into yodlee, and then go over every month. Now I have the flexibility to adapt my budget to fit my life, however it happens to change!
3) Methodology. YNAB is not just a software, it is a methodology, and the methodology will change the way you spend your money.
I was already a good saver before YNAB. Our one-income family lives on about 1/2 of my gross income. The rest is saved. YNAB is supercharging every step we take towards financial independence, and I expect it will bring my family to FI sooner than I had previously imagined. All while allowing us to use our resources in a manner that brings us value. This means I can sit in a coffee shop with my daughter on a day off, take the family on nice vacations, and still meet our savings goals.
